Killeen: Mayor Debbie Nash-King declares local state of disaster ahead of April 8 Solar Eclipse

According to the City, this is a preemptive measure that will activate disaster response teams.

KILLEEN, Texas — The City of Killeen declared a local state of disaster at a press conference on Tuesday, April 2 ahead of the Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8. 

According to the City, this declaration will allow disaster response teams to mobilize in the event that that they are needed to carry out emergency operation plans. The City is expecting a massive influx of visitors during the days leading up to and the day of the Solar Eclipse. 

"In light of the potential impact on our city, I am issuing a disaster declaration. This declaration is not meant to instill fear or panic, but rather to ensure that we are fully prepared to handle any contingencies that may arise during this time," Mayor Nash-King explained at a press conference on Tuesday. 

Nash-King continued to reassure everyone that any emergency incident will be met with a swift response as the City is taking an "All-hands-on-deck" approach to the rare event.
