HILL COUNTY, Texas — As a police officer, you're trained to handle a wide variety of situations, many of which don't end up being reported to the public.
However, in instances like this one, it's certainly a story worth sharing.
On the night of Thursday, Dec. 12, the Hill County Sheriff's Office was notified by the Laredo Police Department that a suspect potentially connected to a cargo theft might have been in their area and traveling north on I-35.
After spotting an 18-wheeler that had a license plate that matched the one from the Laredo PD report, the sheriff's office says a deputy and Texas DPS trooper pulled the vehicle over to confirm that it was transporting stolen goods.
However, what wasn't expected was what the contents of the stolen goods would end up being: which was over 34,000 avocados.
Holy guacamole!
In fact, the Hill County Sheriff's Office says they believe the find to be the biggest recovery of stolen avocados in county history. It was also without a doubt the largest case of stolen avocado recovery in Deputy Ty Hardy's career, according to the sheriff's office.
After the discovery was made, the Laredo Police Department was informed of what was found. They requested that the driver be released, but to also have the stolen avocados seized and towed to a separate location to be moved to a refrigerated trailer owned by the company that was victim of the cargo theft.
No avocados were harmed during the incident, according to the sheriff's office.
