AUSTIN, Texas — Tens of thousands of people packed up and moved out of Texas over the past few years, and now we're seeing where they went thanks to new data.
The U.S. Census Bureau released migration data for 2021 and 2022 showing more than 42,000 Texans moved to California. Other top states where Texans moved were Florida, Oklahoma, Colorado and Georgia. But while tens of thousands left the state, according to the data, Texas has the lowest outmigration rate in the U.S.
The top states Texans moved to in 2021-22 were:
- California (42,279)
- Florida (38,207)
- Oklahoma (26,440)
- Colorado (25,466)
- Georgia (23,754)
On the flip side, the Lone Star State is still a top destination for Californians, Floridians and New Yorkers. The largest state-to-state migration flows in 2022 involved people moving to and from highly populated states, including 102,442 movers from California to Texas.
Meanwhile, California had the lowest rate of in-movers nationally. Despite a relatively large number of people moving to the state, California also had a large base of movers overall, accounting for the state’s low in-migration rate, the Census Bureau said.
The District of Columbia had the highest outmigration rate, with most people moving to neighboring Maryland or Virginia.
Other large state-to-state migration flows involved people moving from highly populated neighboring states, according to the Census Bureau. For example, a large number of people moved from New York to New Jersey.
