MCLENNAN COUNTY – The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office is warning county residents of a scam involving callers impersonating a deputy.
Using the real name of a McLennan County Sergeant, the scammers are calling unsuspecting residents – telling them they missed a court date and demanding money under threat of arrest. Sheriff Parnell McNamara said the scammers were demanding between $400 and $500.
Dispatchers were flooded with phone calls on Easter, reporting the scam. The sheriff said the scammers were instructing people to wire them money.
The Sheriff’s Office tracked the scammers’ cell phones and believes at least some of the perpetrators may be from out of state.
If you receive a call, hang up immediately. If you write down the caller’s phone number and want to share that information with law enforcement, you may call the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office at 254-757-5000.
Scam experts say telephone spoofing technology makes it possible for scammers to fake their phone numbers.
Officials with the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.
