WACO, Texas — A new organization at Baylor University aimed at helping people embrace their natural beauty held its second annual natural hair expo Saturday.
Members of the Roots organization said they wanted to face the challenges some African-American women face when choosing the right hair style.
One challenge these women face is the perception some hold of natural hair, considering it unprofessional.
Organizers said they want to change the norms and encourage people to be who they are.
“The club is really just promoting hair education and the celebration of black hair and just kind of giving girls and guys confidence to wear their hair anyway they want to on campus," Roots president Gabrielle Chaney said.
Products from afro picks to shea butter conditioners were on display at the expo while consumers were offered free food, music and haircuts.
"Different cultures coming together just learning about our hair and what we do," Chaney said. "We have vendors coming from all over Texas selling products."
Roots members said they hope to provide cost-efficient hair products for students and help young men and women feel confident about their crowning glory.
"When you become comfortable with yourself it's easier for you to express yourself through your hair, and you stop looking at other people for approval and you start doing your own thing," club member Michelle Obiesie said.
Ticket sales for the event will be donated to the Family Abuse Center of Waco.
