Real or AI? | Photo of Secret Service agents smiling after Trump assassination attempt

Using reverse image search, the image was discovered to be altered and is fake.

BUTLER, Pa. — Misinformation is continuing to spread after the attempted assassination of Former President Donald Trump.

That's why it's important to know where the information is coming from.

A picture of three Secret Service agents grinning while Trump is bleeding with his fist in the air is being spread across social media platforms.

Users are urging others to share the image and are wondering why the agents are all smiling.

Reverse searching the image will show if it is real and where it came from. Below are some tips on how to do this.

On a computer, right click and pick the option "search image with Google". Then click "find image source".

This will help show you the exact matches of the photo. You can also do this on your phone using Google Lens.

Just upload the photo and it will show matches.

After doing this, 6 News found several social media posts with a similar photo.

However, the difference is that the agents are not smiling.

The original photo was taken by Associated Press photographer, Evan Vucci.

The photo shows serious expressions from security personnel.

Vucci also has multiple other photos from when Trump was shot at and none of the agents are smiling.

Other tips:

  • Check the source: are they credible sources of information?

    • Who’s the author or source?

    • Is the source of information biased?

    • Have they posted other misinformation before?

    • Is it from a well known or legitimate website?

  • Check the date. Is the information current, are other credible sources posting it the same day?

  • Pause before sharing if a piece of information makes you feel anxious, upset or angry. Misinformation often spreads during times of emotion.

It's also common for AI-generated images to have exaggerated facial expressions and inconsistencies.

Be sure to zoom in when checking photos that you may be questioning.
