State Senator supports “gun free zone” at State Fair of Texas

A San Antonio Democrat says gun violence will continue in Texas because of the state’s "loose gun laws."

SAN ANTONIO — State Senator Roland Gutierrez, a vocal proponent of gun control, says it seems like things just keep repeating themselves here in Texas.

The Democrat from San Antonio, whose district also includes Uvalde, supports the State Fair of Texas’ decision to ban guns from this year’s event.

The policy change came after a gunman opened fire at last year’s fair, injuring three people.

Fair officials have refused to acquiesce to Republican demands that they rescind that policy, arguing that hundreds of armed police officers will be on site.

Sen. Gutierrez doesn’t think gun violence will ever end in Texas.

“You’ve got Republicans and their loose gun laws. They keep doubling, tripling down and more bad things happen. We saw what happened last year at the State Fair. We saw what happened in Allen. We’ve seen Uvalde, San Jacinto. You name it,” the Democrat told us on Inside Texas Politics.

The Senator also reacted to the news that some of the videos of officers responding to the Robb Elementary shooting in 2022 were not released following a court order.

After a lengthy legal battle, Uvalde city officials finally released a large trove of video and audio related to the shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

But a few days after that initial release, the police department announced more officer videos had been discovered.

An investigation is underway into why the videos weren't included in the release.

Sen. Gutierrez says he has no idea what’s on that video.

“I don’t think anybody knows. But that goes to the bigger pieces of faulty investigation by the District Attorney’s office, indicting two guys only, when she should have indicted a whole lot of DPS troopers, a Texas Ranger. That didn’t happen. It brings to mind, to me, the defectiveness of her investigation,” the Democrat said.
