Challenger Hillary Hickland Republican winner of District 55, beating longtime state Rep. Hugh Shine

Meanwhile in Bell County, the race for District Attorney remains too close to call and William Cooke wins Bell County Sheriff.

TEMPLE, Texas — Challenger Hillary Hickland was declared the Republican winner of District 55, beating longtime State Rep. Hugh Shine on Super Tuesday and earning her ticket on the ballot this November.

"We are very optimistic," Hickland told 6 News. "We're very excited. I'm just so honored by voters that came out to support me that believe in me. And I'm really excited for the future of our district."

As of 11 p.m., Hickland had 53% of the vote compared to Shine's 40%.

District 55 represents much of Temple and Belton, as well as other areas in Bell County.

Last December, Gov. Greg Abbott endorsed Hickland while he made a stop in Temple. It was the first time since May 2022 that he endorsed a primary opponent of a currently held Republican seat, according to the Texas Tribune

When asked about some of the first things she wants to address, she said the border, property taxes and school choice.

"We've got to secure our border and we've got to lower property taxes, and most specially the thing I'm excited about is passing school choice for all parents to have the power over their children's future," she said.

Hickland didn't go into detail, but she said, "I have."

After winning the Republican primary election, Hickland will be on the November ballot.
