FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — A U.S. Army staff sergeant stationed at Fort Cavazos is facing murder charges over the shooting death of a Killeen man back in February.
Staff Sgt. Marlone L. Best is accused of shooting and killing Larry Kidd Jr., 28, back on Feb. 17, 2024, according to the U.S. Army Office of Special Trial Counsel.
Around 8 p.m. that day, the Killeen Police Department received a call about a man, later identified as Kidd, who was shot in the 900 block of W. Central Texas Expressway. Kidd was then taken to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. An autopsy report was also ordered, police say.
One person was taken into custody at the time, but police never identified them.
It wasn't until Aug. 12 when Best was court martialed and charged with premeditated murder, according to the special counsel. He is expected to be arraigned and a military judge will set the dates for the pre-trial hearings, as well as the trial itself, the counsel added.
According to Kidd's obituary, he was a husband and father to three children. He graduated from Killeen High School in 2013 and played football at Mary Harden Baylor in Belton, as well as Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico.
No other information was released at this time.
