FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — On Thursday, U.S. Army officials released the charge sheet for the soldier accused of murdering a sergeant at Fort Cavazos last year.
According to Lt. Col. Charles Patterson, the soldier, identified as Spc. Nicholas B. Lowery was charged with one count of unpremeditated murder and two counts of obstructing justice.
The charge sheet states that Lowery of the 1st Calvary Sustainment Brigade reportedly murdered a sergeant by shooting him in the head with a handgun between Aug. 26, 2023 and Aug. 27, 2023. He also reportedly lied to law enforcement about the murder on Sept. 7, 2023, as well as tampered with evidence from the crime scene.
In the charge sheet, the name of the victim was redacted.
Last year on Aug. 27, 2023, Sgt. Alfredo Martinez, also part of the 1st Calvary Division Sustainment Brigade, died on post. His family told Univision in Austin that he died from a gunshot wound and that two soldiers were with him at the time. The Spanish-language news outlet said the two soldiers, who weren't identified, told authorities Martinez shot himself.
His family told 6 News that they don't believe the Army is being honest and open about what happened.
Lowery pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Earlier this week, Army officials released the charge sheet for the second soldier charged in connection to this murder. Spc. Rene Heber, also part of the 1st Calvary Division Sustainment Brigade, was charged with accessory to murder after the fact, accessory to involuntary manslaughter after the fact, and obstructing justice.
