Dual Role of Leadership: Waco ISD Principal Inspires Students as Member of Army National Guard

Bradford McMillan is the principal of Tennyson middle school.

WACO, Texas — Six News is shining a spotlight on an inspiring middle school principal in Waco who balances the responsibilities of educating students while fulfilling his duty to protect our nation.

Principal Bradford McMillan captures the hearts and minds of his students at Tennyson middle school.

“Kids are fun,” said McMillan.  “I like to see the lightbulb moments in the kids. I like to see them grow and learn and develop as young men and women.”

He shows them that you can have multiple passions and responsibilities and encourages them to think more about their futures.

“It is a calling, definitely a duty of mine as someone who has been blessed with the opportunity to educate,” said McMillan.

Bradford is not only known for education, but also celebrated as a hero for his service in the Texas Army National Guard.

“It is great to serve your country and give back to the community,” said Bradford.

Bradford enrolled in the national guard seven years ago.

In October, he was pinned as a chaplain and promoted to captain at the Waco Independent School District administration building.

“One of the benefits of being in the National Guard is this idea of being a citizen soldier. So, you can still work in the public sector, but also serve the nation as a soldier.

With each passing day, he is not just shaping young minds academically, but also showing that true leadership extends beyond school and into the heart of the community.

“I’ve had so many students congratulate me and say they also want to be in the United States Army, said Bradford. “So, I think seeing someone in my position I would say that you can do it too.”

McMillan told six news he is grateful that Waco ISD fully supports him being a member of the National Guard.
