HOUSTON — When Zach May walked into the Toyota Center in Houston to watch the Rockets play the Mavericks on Sunday night, he didn't expect to head home with $25,000.
The China Spring basketball player was selected to partake in the Rockets' Shoot Your Shot contest, which takes a randomly selected fan from the crowd and tasks them with making four shots that get progressively more difficult: a layup, free throw, three-point shot, and half-court shot. Participants get 30 seconds to complete the four shots, and can win $100, $250, $500, and $25,000 for sinking each respective shot.
Despite needing a few extra attempts to sink the 3-pointer, May only needed six shots to win the grand prize, and had plenty of seconds to spare to even attempt a few more shots.
But the best part of it all? He got to celebrate his 18th birthday with his family that same day.
May, a senior, is committed to continuing his hoops career with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton once he graduates.
Ultimately, even though the Rockets weren't able to pull out the win over the Mavs that night, May was able to go home with a major win of his own.
