FALLS COUNTY, Texas — The William P. Hobby Women's State Prison Unit in Falls County has been placed on a precautionary lockdown due to a COVID-19 outbreak. There are currently 282 active cases. Of those, 264 are offenders and 18 are employees, according to Spokesperson Jeremy Desel.
Desel said most of the cases are asymptomatic. This spike in cases is a result of mass testing done by the TDCJ Strike Teams of all offenders and staff at that unit. He said the jail has performed mass testing since May and has conducted more than 200,000 tests.
Testing was conducted on 204 employees and 1166 offenders from September 29 through October 1. Those results began to come back on October 4. Now, there are 274 offenders who are in medical insolation.
According to Desel, there are 31 offenders who are symptomatic. The entire unit will be on the precautionary lockdown until 14 days from the latest positive test. Also, the 18 employees who tested positive and are in self-quarantine.
