WACO, Texas — The medical field is not easy to get into and during a global pandemic, health care workers are on the front lines.

Students like Restylyn Atalisay who are graduating from The Greater Waco Advanced Health Care Academy are ready to dive in.

"It excites me and I think whatever excites you is probably the field you're called to do,” Atalisay said.

She wants to study public health and ultimately become an Epidemiologist, now more than ever.

"Their biggest job right now is informing the public and preventing the spread of coronavirus, and it's so interesting to me because I love people and I love history,” Atalisay said.

She was born in the Philippines and arrives in Central Texas at a very young age. Now she said she’s ready for her next big milestone, which is going to college at the University of Texas in Austin.

Other students like Isabel Mendoza said this crisis has made her positive that the medical field is the right place for her.

"It makes me more sure, like I'm more confident in what I want to do and I'm excited that I want to do it, and just dive right into it,” Mendoza said.

She and her peers now have more appreciation for doctors and nurses who have been working tirelessly for others.

"I have a lot of respect for them because I see that they're on their feet and I see that they're always exhausted,” Mendoza said.

Several students will be recognized with a drive-thru celebration at The Greater Waco Advanced Health Care Academy for their accomplishments on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
