WACO, Texas — Starting a new business is all about taking chances, and one Waco man says he knows the risks involved all too well.
Daniel Abarca took a leap of faith in the Silos District and started Hueco Pedicab Tours.
With thousands of people flooding downtown Waco, Abarca (also known as Captain Danny) is becoming pretty popular.
Residents and tourists can find him peddling his way through town as he gives tours in English and Spanish.
"Right now I just shuttle people from the Silos to where ever they want to go,” Abarca said. "If they want to do an hour or hour and a half tour they can book online, and we can take them wherever they want to go."
Right now, Hueco Pedicab Tours offers four types of 60-minute tours for $25 per person and one-way rides around the downtown Waco area for $10 per person. There's a two to three person limit per cab.
Abarca said he founded the business hoping to bring something different to Waco.
“People like to see us around," Abarca said. "They get so curious, and they want to jump in the cab. Which is great because we make money."
Abarca isn't the only one cashing in on the city's pedicab demand. Waco police officer Jason Lundquist owns On My Way Pedicab.
The business owners aren't looking to compete, though. Abarca said he's friends with Lundquist and the two regularly help each other out.
"We have the same business type and have the same service. why not tag team and work together?" Abarca said.
Of course, peddling in the Texas heat isn't easy work. Abarca said when he first started a month ago he weighed around 212 pounds.
"I've lost fifteen pounds,” Abarca said.
Abarca said he wants to make money and use his service to help others.
