WACO, Texas — After winning first place at a national swimming championship in 2018, Will Grant, a Waco High School senior, is headed to Harvard University in the fall.
"I didn't expect to do it at all and not even close, you know, just really surprised myself and I'm very happy for it," Grant said.
Grant has been swimming since he was 7 years old, which lead him to win the national championship.
"Harvard has always been a really big dream of mine," Grant said. "I swim competitively and the coach reached out to me, and I just fell in love with it immediately."
When Grant received his acceptance into the school, he said he was elated.
Larry King, an assistant principal who was Grant's biology teacher a few years ago said he was not surprised at all by his achievement.
"Will is one of those students that you recognize very quickly and that you have to challenge the teacher more than the teacher can challenge them," King said.
Waco High School principal Ed Love said Grant is setting the standards for the rest of the student body.
"I'm a very proud principal and Will is an outstanding young man, so he deserves it and I'm just so proud," Love said.
Grant has some advice for other students:
"Do what you love and be proactive," he said.
Which, has so far, done great things for him.
Grant will graduate from Waco High School in June and he will begin classes in Harvard this fall.
