AUSTIN, Texas — The trial for the case of a 12-year-old girl who suffered rope burns around her neck during a 2016 Live Oak Classical school camping trip is nearing its end.
The girl took the stand Monday. She said she testified so the jury could get a better understanding of who she is -- a pianist and an honor roll student.
She said during her testimony, that although students didn't use racial slurs toward her, they made her feel isolated and would make fun of her because her family couldn't afford cable. The girl said she had been kicked and shoved by a boy in school and that the boy was one of the three she said wrapped a rope around her neck on the field trip. The girl testified that the rope was tight and she couldn't breathe.
The girl said the rope burned her neck pretty badly.
The girl is now 14, and her mother is suing the school for $10 million, $7 million more than before the trial began. The mother said the school did not do enough to stop the bullying of her child.
The school said there was no bullying and the incident was an accident.
Closing arguments are expected to begin Tuesday.
