WACO, Texas — Sen. John Cornyn delivered remarks at the grand opening of the Waco Fire Department’s newest station on Friday.
He highlighted the increased fire protection capabilities the new station adds to the department, and the federal grant he announced in September to help the department hire six new firefighters.
Cornyn toured the new station with Mayor Kyle Deaver and Fire Chief Bobby Tatum before the grand opening ceremony.
The Waco Fire Department received an $842,523.30 federal grant through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, a federal program through the Department of Homeland Security that provides direct funding to fire departments to increase staffing and deployment capabilities.
Three of the six new firefighters that will be hired will serve at the new Fire Station No. 5, increasing its manpower by one-third.
After the tour and grand opening ceremony, Cornyn answered media questions.
