WACO, Texas — The Waco City Council unanimously approved its consent agenda, which included a resolution to purchase 20 acres of land to act as a buffer for a landfill project.
The land will cost the city about $400,000, and falls in McLennan and Limestone counties.
Leading up to the vote, there were months of battle between residents and the city council.
In September, the council approved a plan to purchase land in Axtell for the landfill, and those plans won't move forward unless the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality approves it.
One resident said the area where the landfill could go is going to make a big impact on families in the area.
"All the area around that has been in families for hundreds of years, and so all of that land will lose value as far as generational value," said Axtell Independent School District superintendent JR Proctor.
Waco Mayor Kyle Deaver said the city is communicating with the public.
"We are talking one-on-one with residents about some of their concerns, trying to find ways to address those," he said.
