Mosquitos are everywhere during the Summer in Texas and they are some of the most annoying pests around.
Many people are looking for that successful trick or tip to keep them away for good.
There are several popular ideas that come around every year, but do they work or are they actually true?
Channel 6 spoke with John Fell, a local entomologist and pest control owner about some of the popular conceptions surround mosquitos and how to keep them away.
Mosquitos are attracted to Carbon Dioxide which is a chemical we release when we breath. So, the harder you breath the more mosquitos you will attract.
Do mosquitos like to come out during a certain time of day?
The answer is yes, mosquitos are more active in the morning and right as the sun is going down.
How to keep them away.
Citronella Candles are a very popular product, but do they work? The answer is yes, but that also depends on the weather.
“So, if you are sitting on your back porch, and there’s not a lot of wind citronella candles to repel insects but what works better is using products that have deet in it so you can buy multiple different candles that contain deet and it is going to do a lot better job for you than citronella candle’s do,” Fell said.
The best thing you can do to keep mosquitos away is to drain anything that holds standing water around you to prevent them from staying in your yard.
Does eating garlic or supplements repel mosquitos?
There is also the old belief that eating garlic or supplements with B vitamins can repel mosquitoes but studies show those will not do you any good. Those tricks have been verified as false.
Also, scratching only makes those bites worse, but putting ice on the bite will calm down some of the inflammation.
