UT Southwestern mourns loss of 41-year-old assistant professor killed in Waco shooting

Police are still searching for the suspects involved in this case.

WACO, Texas — UT Southwestern is mourning the loss of 41-year-old Gilberto Moralez who was killed in a shooting on Feb. 23 in Waco. 

According to the Medical Center, Moralez was an Assistant Professor at the School of Health Professions, a role he had been serving in since 2019. 

UT Southwestern released the following statement:

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Gilberto Moralez, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the UT Southwestern School of Health Professions. Dr. Moralez leaves a legacy of compassion and dedication to advancing medical science and improving the health of our community. He will be deeply missed. We extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to Dr. Moralez’s family and friends."

On Feb. 23, the Waco Police Department says officers were called to the 200 block of Mary Avenue where they found Moralez suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died at the scene despite attempted life-saving measures.

According to Waco PD, the shooting originated from an altercation between multiple people, which led to one of them shooting. 

The Waco Police Department has not yet identified any suspects and continues to ask the community for help in solving this case. 

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call the department at 254-750-7500 or submit a tip to Crime Stopper at 254-753-4357. If a tip leads to an arrest, you could be rewarded up to $2,000.
