TSA tips you need to know before flying this summer

It's no secret that going through airport security can be frustrating. But while security is important, the Transportation Security Administration is trying to make the rules as clear as possible for the increase in travel this summer. The agency held a presentation at the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport Thursday to try and help the public through those lines a little bit faster.

First, it is important to know what items you can carry on, what items you can bring in luggage, and what you cannot bring on the plane at all. As a general rule, you cannot bring knives, multi-tools, or any bladed object as a carry on. You also cannot bring any sort of weapon. All liquids, gels, creams, aerosols, and pastes must be 3.4 ounces or less and must fit together in a single quart-sized bag.

Weapons, including guns, can be transported in checked-in luggage, but guns have special regulations. A firearm must be declared at the ticket counter and the owner must fill out a certificate. Additionally, the gun must be stowed in a locked, hard-sided case that only the owner can open.

Items that cannot be transported include flammable liquids and anything that resembles an explosive or could be used to house one. The Transportation Security Administration has a guide list of commonly transported items here on their website. If you have a question about a single item, you can now ask the TSA directly at @AskTSA on Twitter.

For those looking to drastically reduce the amount of time you spend in line at the airport, you can actually get pre-cleared by the TSA in Austin with TSA Pre Check. Visit this website to find out how.
