WACO, Texas — Waco salon owners have called on Governor Greg Abbot to let their businesses open. They said sanitizing for their customers is standard practice.
When Abbott announced that Texas businesses could reopen, those who work at Design Team Full Service Salon and Spa on Wooded Acres were disappointed that their business was not on the list.
"I believe that most of the disappointment probably came from the fact that salons are heavily regulated in regards to sanitation,” Salon owner Don Cooper SAID. “That's something we have to abide by all the time. Not just during the pandemic."
Cooper said the Salon is consistently sanitizing and use Barbicide disinfectant on all chairs, brushes and combs. They believe customers can get their hair styled and still be safe.
"We are not face-to-face. 95 percent of the time they are in the chair and we are behind them,” Design Team Hairstylist Sandy Lynch said. “Before someone sits down we sanitize and sterilize our chairs and station.”
Cooper and his wife Melisa Cooper said they've gone through webinars on what the Design Team Salon will look like once it reopens. They said stylists can now have only one client at a time.
"We are prepared to be wearing masks,” Melisa Cooper said. “Our clients are being asked to wear masks, and if they don’t have one we will have one for them."
Despite what the governor thinks about reopening, Design Team said they are ready as can be.
"We always have and will always continue to make sure our clients are taken care of, so we are looking forward to it," Don Cooper said.
Governor Abbott said he would reopen barbershops and hair salons on May 18, but that is only if he feels the spread of the coronavirus is under control.
