State representative tours Cindy Walker home in Mexia, Texas

Rep. Angelia Orr visits the historic Mexia property as it undergoes restoration

MEXIA, Texas — The Cindy Walker home in Mexia is making great progress in its restoration, and State Rep. Angelia Orr recently took a tour to see it.

In the heart of District 13, is the home of Hall of Fame Songwriter Cindy Walker.

"I adore old homes and I adore small towns and I think this has a great deal of potential. Especially that you have so much acreage here and there are gardens yet to be restored," said Orr.

Orr represents Limestone County and wanted to see the home where a woman made history, writing top ten hits across five decades from an upstairs writing studio at 114 S. Brooks Street.

"We have such a rich history here. I think once people visit and realize that, they will want to keep coming back," said Rep. Orr.

The home was recently named to the list of "America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The Cindy Walker Foundation purchased it two years ago and fundraised critical repairs already underway.

Orr suggests forming partnerships with some of the state's higher education institutions for architectural and archival support.

"I think a project like this will bring people interested in music, history, architecture and gardens and just small towns in general," said Orr.

In December, Mexia will be designated by the Texas Music Office as a "Music Friendly Community," a certification earned through the work of the Mexia EDC and community partners.

Just another step toward the goal of music and heritage tourism that can make a big impact in a small town.
