Waco fire Department, Waco Police Department, Dunkin Donuts, Shipley’s Donuts and The Salvation Army will be celebrating National Donut Day Friday morning by serving them to local police and firemen.

The Salvation Army is asking for anyone who enjoys a donut on the day to share a picture to their social media profiles using #GivingIsSweet.

National Donut day is held annually on the first Friday of June and this particular year is special. It marks 100 years since The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” served the treats to American soldiers on the front lines during World War I.

The “Donut Lassies” are often credited with popularizing donuts in the United States when troops returned home from war.

In 1917, The Salvation Army began a mission to provide spiritual and emotional support of U.S. soldiers fighting in France during World War I. About 250 volunteers traveled overseas and set up small huts located near the front lines where they could give soldiers clothes, supplies, and baked goods.

The Salvation Army said the donut now serves as a symbol of the services and comfort.

The Salvation Army provides to more than 25 million people each year.
