WACO, Texas — The Salvation Army in Waco is preparing to open its doors to those in need during the below-freezing temperatures expected to begin Saturday, Jan. 13.
The shelter, located at 300 Webster in Downtown Waco, will offer a place for people to come to escape the cold and get any essential items they may need.
Corps Officer Major James Taylor stated, "Any time the weather drops below 40 degrees we open The Salvation Army Shelter as a warming station until temperatures rise. We are making plans to provide extra supplies for more people. It is inevitable that we will see more people come to us for assistance this week, especially seeking overnight shelter from the bitter cold."
The Salvation Army has also partnered with the City of Waco to prepare meals for the Dewey Community Center, which will also serve as a warming shelter. This center is expected to be open from Sunday, Jan. 14 to Wednesday, Jan. 17. The City says the center will provide a warm space, cots, blankets, Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) and bottled water.
