Salado High School Band conducts 22-hour walk to honor suicide prevention

The Salado High School Band is hosting a 22-hour walk, aiming to raise awareness about suicide, particularly the statistic that 22 veterans die by suicide every day.

SALADO, Texas — The Salado High School Band kicked off a 22-hour walk, aiming to raise awareness for suicide prevention and honor the memories of family, friends, and veterans who have died to suicide. The event will continue until 1 p.m. tomorrow, symbolizing unity and support within the community.

The initiative comes in response to the statistic that 22 veterans in the U.S. commit suicide every day. Local event leaders, deeply affected by recent increases in suicide rates within Salado and surrounding areas, hope to foster a sense of connection and healing through this poignant gathering.

“I hope that the community rallies around this,” Mayor Bert Henry said. “We’re going to do this for the next 22 hours. I'm looking forward to seeing the turnout. Just a reminder, we’re all in this together. It takes a village, especially in this kind of situation.”

Participants aim to keep the American flag moving continuously throughout the event. The Salado High School Band is also donating 10 percent of the proceeds to selected suicide prevention programs, emphasizing its commitment to making an impact in the fight against suicide.

Organizers believe that through this walk, they can not only raise awareness but also create a supportive environment for those affected by suicide.

For anyone struggling or in need of support, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at 988. The Salado High School Band encourages everyone to participate in this meaningful event as they work towards a future where fewer lives are lost to suicide.
