LORENA, Texas — A Robinson Police officer was expected to recover after crashing his patrol vehicle into a sinkhole early Friday morning, according to Robinson Police Assistant Chief Larry Adams.
Adams said Patrol Sgt. William Hughes was headed home around 6:15 a.m. after ending his shift. He was driving in the 1900 block of Bullhide Creek in Lorena.
Adams said the road had washed out due to the heavy rain over the past several days. The county had made repairs earlier in the week but Adams said it may have washed out again and Hughes didn't see the hole in the dark. Pictures from the scene show his SUV crashed head first into the hole.
The Waco Fire and Technical Rescue Team helped to safely get Hughes out of the vehicle. He was flown to Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple around 7:15 a.m.
Adams said most of the injuries were to his face. He said Hughes would be allowed to go home after a couple more days in the hospital to recover.
Hughes' vehicle was pulled out of the hole around 9:10 a.m. The road remained close Friday afternoon.
