Humane Society of Central Texas push for more adoptions as negotiations with the City of Waco continue

The Humane Society of Central Texas started the process to terminate its contract with the City of Waco and leave the Waco Animal Shelter campus in July.

WACO, Texas — The Humane Society of Central Texas is still negotiating with the City of Waco to continue service in the city.

The Humane Society provides adoption, rescue and foster opportunities for the homeless animals at the Waco Animal Shelter.

While negotiations continue, the Humane Society is extending their free adoptions for cats and dogs until further notice.

Humane Society director Sarah Fanning told 6 News adoptions aren't exactly where they would like them to be but they're grateful for those who decided to open their homes to animals in need.

"Just for this weekend, we only had about 20 adoptions," Fanning explained. "For three days, it's a pretty low number, but it did get us underneath 200 on site, which has been nice."

People like Conrad Lund who adopted his new dog on Monday encourage more people to adopt animals and not shop.

"These animals really have their own personalities," Lund explained. "Having an extra companion that just pretty much loves you unconditionally and just always wants you to be there with them. It's pretty much the best."

The City of Waco and the Humane Society have been partnered for decades and they first achieved a No-Kill status of 90%+ for animals in their care in the Fall 2016. Over 18,000 pets have been adopted, 6,500 have gone to No-Kill rescue partners and 5,000 have been reunited with their families in their care, according to the Humane Society.

The number of animals at the Humane Society currently sits at 198. If the organization leaves Waco, the animals will be under the ownership of the Waco Animal Shelter.

"Adoptions are important and supporting your local shelter is also important," Fanning added. "It's all about the dogs and cats getting into homes."

To help with capacity, Fanning said organizations like the Waco Animal Group (WAG) assist the Humane Society with community sheltering and fostering. No matter where negotiations land, they look forward to continuing their partnership with WAG in the future.
