Third-party companies reportedly charging McLennan County residents hundreds to file homestead exemptions

The tax office says these can be filed for free.

MCLENNAN COUNTY, Texas — The McLennan County Tax Office is reminding residents that anyone looking to file Residence Homestead Exemptions can do so for free with the Appraisal District.

The tax office says it has recently received several Property Tax Refund Delivery Designation Forms, which designate a third party to receive a refund from the tax office.

McLennan County Tax Assessor-Collector Randy Rigs stated, "It appears that there are out of town companies that are filing Residence Homestead Exemptions for property taxes and charging unreasonable amounts of money to do so. An exemption for a homestead may be filed for free with the McLennan Central Appraisal District."

According to the tax office, a Residence Homestead Exemption Application can be filed for free with Form 50-114. This form can be found on the appraisal district's website here.

The tax office says some residents have allowed third parties to file the form for them and they are getting charged hundreds of dollars for it.

Residents with questions are encouraged to contact the tax office at 254-757-5130 or the appraisal district at 254-752-9864.
