MARLIN, Texas — Marlin Independent School District is on the verge of closing in the next few months, according to City Manager Cedric Davis.
If the state closes Marlin ISD, a charter school will be pursued as an option for students.
The Marlin City Council held a special called meeting Tuesday night to discuss consultants for Marlin's potential charter school.
Following an executive session, the council announced Dr. Marcus Nelson as their new hire.
"I'm just so happy the city of Marlin has given me the opportunity to prove myself and continue the road to redemption," said Nelson.
Nelson is the former Waco ISD Superintendent. He resigned in March 2019 following a drug charge.
"If nothing else I've learned it's important for me to just accept the fact that I was wrong and move forward with a fierce enthusiasm. I'm just so happy to get the chance to do what I love and to work with kids and improving schools," said Nelson.
Nelson was the only person who applied for the consultant position.
Davis said Marlin officials met with the Texas Education Commissioner two months ago. They did not get a definitive answer if the district will close.
When officials asked if there was a 2020-2021 school plan, the commissioner said the future of Marlin ISD did not look promising, according to Davis.
"If the district closes, surrounding school districts can't absorb those kids," said Davis. "They are struggling to keep their grades up. Most of them are almost filled to capacity. The next performing school district is Waco. And that means a person will have to be bused a half an hour just to get to school."
A charter school was brought up in the conversation. Davis said officials were told there needs to be a consultant to do the paper work, establish the charter school and serve as a "middle man" between the city and state. Nelson said he's excited about the future of education in Marlin.
"The purple and the gold, the bull dog mentality, all that is a part of tradition and pride, and that needs to be protected. I can tell you for me that is my focus," said Nelson.
Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath will make a decision on whether or not Marlin ISD will close or stay open in March.
