LORENA, Texas — Tuesday evening, Sgt Peter Rivas of the Lorena Police Department was awarded the Texas Association of School Resource Officers (TASRO) School Resource Officer of the Year award.
Sgt Rivas is the SRO for Lorena High School.
The TASRO represents over 500 SROs, administrators, and other safety personnel across the state.
"We are proud of Sgt Rivas and the impact he has had on the young lives at Lorena ISD," said Chief Holt.
School Resource Officers are trained law enforcement officers that typically have experience and training in working with children and youths at schools, but requirements vary between each state. They have a hand in keeping campuses safe and receive similar, if not identical, training as regular patrol officers.
