'If you're into good music, you knew my dad' | Remembering local music icon Tony Calhoun

Calhoun was part of the Tony Calhoun and Pleasure band in the 1990s. They played all over Central Texas and he went on to play with B.B. King.

WACO, Texas —

A local music icon, Tony (who preferred spelling it Tonee) Calhoun, passed away Friday after complications following surgery. He was 65.

Calhoun was part of the Tony Calhoun and Pleasure band in the 1990s. They played all over Central Texas with Kristen Wolf, David Peterson and Jimmy Jones.

“He's an inspiration to any musician he played with,” drummer David Peterson said. “We played all around Waco, even places that wouldn't normally have bands and, you know, everybody knew who we were, and it was like the time of my life."

Guitar player and singer for the band, Kristen Wolf said they played at the Martini Factory, Burgers and Blues, and Papa Joe's to name a few.

"I was thinking all day if you'd ask me one thing that I could say about him, it would just be magical," Wolf said.

Calhoun's daughter, Gabriella Calhoun, said he went on to play with B.B. King later on in his career.

"I feel like if you know music, if you're into good music, you knew my dad," Calhoun said.

She said he was a dream chaser.

“So if any of us are sad or, you know, just want to hear your voice, we can just always pop on a CD,” Calhoun said.

The family said they are planning for the funeral to be held Saturday, but the details are still in the works.
