KILLEEN, Texas — Bell County Water Control & Improvement District No. 1 (WCID 1) is enforcing a 30% reduction in water use due to a leak that was discovered on Thursday, March 28.
Due to the leak, the City of Killeen announced it would be temporarily implementing a Stage 4 Water Conservation Plan. All outside watering, including car washing, pool filling or decorative fountains is prohibited at this time.
The City of Killeen said the Public Works Department is working to maintain the water supply and has taken "proactive measures" to ensure storage tanks are adequately filled and they have contingency plans in place.
According to WCID 1, the leak was found on the 48-inch main line that delivers water from the Belton Treatment Plant to Station 6 near Fort Hood Street and Veterans Memorial Boulevard.
This main line is crucial for water delivery to Killeen, Fort Cavazos, Copperas Cove and other customers throughout Bell County.
According to WCID 1, the leak began as a minor one, not causing any service or environmental impacts. Numerous contractors were called, but none were available to fix it, so excavation and repairs were scheduled to begin on Monday, April 1.
WCID 1 says the small leak became a large one while crews were excavating Monday morning. Now, crews have isolated the portion of the pipe in need of repair and have begun dewatering the area.
Due to this work, WCID 1 is asking all of its customers to abide by the appropriate stage of the Drought Contingency Plan which lays out a 30% reduction in water use.
According to WCID 1, these repairs should take about 48 hours.
