KILLEEN, Texas — The City of Killeen announced that residents must register any of their short-term rentals (STR), i.e. Airbnb or Vrbo, with the city beginning on May 1, 2024.
In 2023, Killeen's City Council approved an STR program and it went into effect on Oct. 1.
This program allows rental operators to rent out a home or another type of living quarters for short periods of time, providing a different option to visitors not looking to stay in a hotel.
According to the city, all STR operators have to register their properties with the City of Killeen to ensure that they are meeting the safety and zoning requirements. Hotel Occupancy Taxes also must be collected from guests for the City, County and State.
The city says it is a violation of the City's Code of Ordinances to operate an STR without the proper permits and registration.
To better inform residents on this ordinance and registration process, the city is hosting a two-part workshop. The first session will inform STR operators about the Hotel Occupancy Tax on Saturday, May 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Killeen Arts and Activities Center.
The second session will teach STR operators how to get and keep an STR permit on Saturday, May 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.
