KILLEEN, Texas — The Killeen Regional Airport will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this Friday, Aug. 2.
To celebrate, officials are holding an event that will be held on the second floor of the airport and have many guest speakers representing the City of Killeen.
Other guest speakers include U.S. Congressman Chet Edwards, Former Killeen Mayor and State Representative Scott Cosper, current State Representative Brad Buckley and more!
The construction of the airport began in March of 2003 and finished August of 2004. The airport was originally named Killeen-Fort Hood Regional airport, which was in conjunction with the then-Fort Hood's Robert Gray Army Airfield. The airport then replaced the Skylark Field and was named the Killeen Municipal Airport.
After Fort Hood was renamed to Fort Cavazos, the Killeen City Council voted to change the name to what we know now as the Killeen Regional Airport, also known as the GRK.
Since the opening of the GRK, it has been a continuous destination for American/American Eagle Airlines. The airport has been served by Delta, United, Continental and Allegiant Air.
The GRK is over 90,000 square feet and has more than 1,500 parking spaces. The runway is so large it can host some of the largest airplanes today.
By the end of the year, the GRK will have two corporate hangars on site.
