Killeen city council approves street maintenance fees for road repairs

The council said it plans to collect the street maintenance fees starting in July 2019. It approved the ordinance with a 4 to 3 vote.

KILLEEN, Texas — The Killeen city council in a meeting Tuesday approved an ordinance that will require homeowners, businesses and other property owners to pay street maintenance fees.

The city said it plans to collect the funds through utility bills, which will in turn be used to upkeep roads.

Killeen mayor Jose Segarra said the repairs will make roads safer for citizens, however, some people are not pleased with the addition to their bills.

"I'm not saying we don't need extra money for street fees, or sidewalk repairs and things like that," Killeen resident John Miller said. "I'm saying that issue should be brought to the citizens of Killeen first. Put it on a ballot. Let us decide. Let us vote on it."

Segarra said citizens will be happy once the streets are improved.
