Over 200 students are forced to change schools after Killeen Charter Academy shut down for good this summer. Priority Charter Network asked the state to close the school because of health concerns and academic problems.
"They failed to meet standards on closing their performance gap between their individual student groups and then also on their post secondary readiness, in other words how well students are prepared for post high school college, career or military" says Texas Education Agency Representative DeEtta Culbertson.
The school has only been open for three years but state officials say closing the school is what is best for the students.
"Unfortunately there are a few that just don't quite meet academic and financial standards. Those have to be closed so that students can continue to receive quality education somewhere else" says Culbertson.
Parents recently received an email from the school explaining the situation and that their child won't be able to return in the fall. With only a few weeks left until the new school year begins many parents are trying to figure out what to do next.
"They were upset because they know that they may not see a lot of the friends that they had made and so just going through that was hard" says Killeen Charter Academy Parent Karen Griffin.
Other parents say they knew this time was coming. One mom says the problems got so bad at this school last year she was forced to pull her kids out, so she's not surprised the school shut down. She says the school recently took in loads of kids from another area charter school that shut down which put a real strain on already stretched resources.
"The leadership style seemed to be kind of broken. The building itself was just old and we were trying to make it fit what it needed and I don't think they had all the resources" says Former Killeen Charter Academy Parent Lauren Brown.
Both moms say they want to see another charter school in the area soon, and hope the next one will stay open for good.
We did reach out to Killeen Charter Academy for a comment and are waiting on a response. The school did arrange for their students to have transportation to the Copperas Cove Charter School in the fall if that's where they plan to attend.
