Humane Society of Central Texas executive director keeps job after discussions of firing

The executive director of the Humane Society of Central Texas' job was on the line after board members called a special meeting to discuss his future with the animal shelter.

WACO, Texas — The Humane Society of Central Texas board members decided the shelter's executive director would keep his job after two hours of discussion Thursday.

Board members called the special meeting to discuss whether Don Bland would be fired from his position.

It's unclear why the board considered firing Bland.

Bland is a well-known figure in the Waco community and has been with the shelter for seven years.

About 20 Bland supporters went to the board meeting with signs protesting the possible termination. Some said since Bland took over as director, he changed the animal welfare community in Waco for the better and lowered the shelter's no-kill rate.

An employee even threatened to walk out had Bland been fired.

Bland said he was exhausted, but was looking forward to moving on and improving the shelter.

"We are going to sit down and work out what we need to do to see where we need to move from here so we can... keep this place going in the right direction," Bland said.
