Witnesses hold down accused gunman after argument over money leads to deadly shooting in Whitney

Witnesses told deputies that Elvin Gage went to Anthony Johnson's house with a shotgun to get money the victim supposedly owed him.

WHITNEY, Texas — An argument over money Thursday led to the shooting death of a 28-year-old man in Whitney, the Hill County Sheriff's Office said.

Someone called 911 at 1:06 p.m. to a home off of FM 2604 for reports of a disturbance.

Deputies found 73-year-old Elvin Dewayne Gage being held by a group in the front yard and Anthony Dewayne Johnson Jr. dead inside the home with a gunshot wound in his chest.

Witnesses told deputies that Gage went to the house with a shotgun to get money that Johnson supposedly owed him. An argument broke out and Gage shot Johnson to death, witnesses said. Witnesses then grabbed Johnson and held him until deputies arrived.

Johnson was arrested and taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries he sustained while being held by witnesses.

He is being held in the Hill County Jail.
