BELTON, Texas — Heritage Park in Belton will be getting a facelift. The city approved a master plan for improvements that will cost $5.1 million.
The city of Belton needs a Texas Parks and Wildlife grant of $750,000 to get started on the project. The Belton City Council passed a resolution of support Tuesday for the grant's application.
James Grant, the assistant director of parks and recreation said they are looking forward to getting started.
"I'm so excited to get it done for the community so they can get out into the park and start seeing the beauty of it," Grant said.
The city purchased 84 acres of an old golf course for $2 million about a year ago With the expansion, Heritage Park is the biggest park in Belton at 149 acres.
Grant said they've had their eyes on the land for a long time.
"We wanted to see what can we make out of this without messing it up, because that's the important thing," Grant said. "It's already so beautiful, we don't want to mess it up. So we want to get small little areas and amenities in the park but we just want to get the people out at the park."
The master plan will be done in phases. When it's completed, it'll include:
• More parking
• More bathrooms
• Multipurpose practice fields
• Dock on Leon River
• Pavilion
• Trails
• Road
• Amphitheater
• Permanent dog park
Grant said since the land was purchased, everything has been falling into place.
"This whole process from the very beginning stages to now has been like a walk in the park. It's gone so smoothly because everybody loves it and everybody wants it," Grant said.
If they receive the grant, they can begin construction of phase in 2020 and it's expected to last about two years.
