HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has awarded the City of Harker Heights a $750,000 grant through their Local Parks Grant program for renovations and upgrades for Kern Park.
The announcement comes after it was announced late last month that the city, alongside Falls County and the City of Bellmead, would be receiving a portion of the allocated $20.6 million from the TPWD.
Some of the things that the grant money will be put towards include:
- Updating the playground area with inclusive play amenities
- The addition of a small splash pad
- Upgrades and enhancements to the restroom facilities
- An updated community garden
- The installation of a new concrete loop trail to encourage more active activities
"This grant is a testament to the state's recognition of the importance of community spaces in fostering a strong sense of unit and well-being," said Parks and Recreation Director, Jeff Achee in a press release. "We are excited about the positive impact the Kern Park renovation will have on the lives of our residents, and we are thankful for the opportunity to create a more inclusive and enjoyable environment for all."
