WACO, Texas — Gyms reopen their doors Monday as part of Governor Greg Abbott’s plan to reopen the state.
After being forced to shut down for almost two months, gyms are now allowed to welcome back their members.
Rodney Martin, president and CEO of the YMCA of Central Texas said they have new protocols in place.
“It’s a new Y, a new of doing things,” Martin said.
Everyone’s temperature must be taken at the door before they walk in and they should wash or sanitize their hands upon entering. Staff must wear masks, and members are encouraged to do so but not required. However, all members must wear gloves that cover the entire hand.
"We're just excited for welcome our members back. We've been listening to all the protocols that the governor has put out, we've been working with our local health department,” Martin said.
The governor’s new health protocols state that all gyms must operate at a 25% capacity. Everything must be disinfected throughout the day. To enforce social distancing, workout equipment must be spaced out.
The YMCA has tape placed on the floor in several areas and if you want to get some cardio in, members will only be allowed to use every other treadmill. The indoor lap pool will be open, but only one person per lane is allowed. All locker rooms and shower facilities will remain closed.
"We'll still have activities for our members, but we wanted everyone to be safe,” Martin said. “I think it's gonna be positive for everybody's enthusiasm and energy as they come out, but let's just be safe as we do that.”
Things will be different as you head back to your gym. Just make sure you follow all the new health protocols and stay safe.
