Texas A&M-Central Texas remember founding leader, Horace "Pete"Taylor

Texas A&M University-Central Texas lowers university flag in remembrance of former military general

KILLEEN, Texas — A&M-Central Texas honored one of their founders on Wednesday, albeit with a heavy heart.

Texas A&M-Central Texas recognized the passing of Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Horace "Pete" Taylor by lowering the university flag outside of Gen. Robert M. Shoemaker Founders Hall, per university release.

University president Richard M. Rhodes declared that the flag will remain lowered until Taylor's memorial, funeral and burial services are over.

"Gen. Taylor meant so much to all of us at A&M-Central Texas. We join our community in commemorating his life, his enormous contributions to the United States military, the Central Texas educational community, and the great love he had for this country," Rhodes said.

Taylor worked closely with Gen. Robert M. Shoemaker and hundreds of community leaders to create the higher education institution based in Killeen, Texas.

Taylor oversaw the school's growth by serving as the inaugural Foundation Board chair for two terms. Through his work, A&M-Central Texas was able to offer scholarships, ultimately becoming a reason for increased student enrollment.

The community deeply loved and respected Taylor for the mentorship that he provided to A&M-Central Texas students and employees.

"It wasn't uncommon to find Gen. Taylor sitting at a table in the café in Founders Hall or in an employee's office, listening carefully to a student or talking to an employee who was pursuing their degree," Rhodes stated.

"He was deeply involved in our community, and yet, he made time to be present for so many who were blessed to have known him as a mentor and a friend. Our deepest condolences go out to all of those who will miss him," Rhodes said.
