Former Milam Co. inmate in hospital

A former inmate at the Milam County jail is in a Temple hospital after he says some of the jail's guards assaulted him.

John L. Robertson, 39, said he was trying to persuade other inmates at the jail to go to the recreation area and a guard took his actions the wrong way.

According to Robertson, he was dragged through a hallway and shoved onto the floor multiple times. One shove, he says, knocked out a tooth.

According to Robertson, he was in the jail for housing before beginning a voluntary drug treatment program and says the incident was the worst experience of his life.

"It was terrifying," Robertson said. "I mean, for somebody just to be in there, trying to go get help for him and his kids, and I end up in the emergency rooma and can't walk."

At one point, he says guards held a taser to his face, at which point he grabbed a sheet and put it on his chest for protection. When he did that, Robertson said the guards yelled that he was trying to hang himself and took him to a padded cell where they removed another inmate.

"They had a smock that was too small for me and was already covered in urine and human feces from the last inmate," Robertson said.

He also said there were feces on the door and wall, and human waste on a bean chute.

"They tried to feed me through the bean chute," Robertson said. "I said, 'No, there's feces right here.' I'm not going to eat anything coming through a bean chute with human waste."

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards said it received Robertson's complaint, however because there are alleged criminal actions involved, they forwarded it to law enforcement agencies like the FBI, Milam County Sheriff and Milam County District Attorney.

The Sheriff said he could not comment because a lawsuit is involved, however the District Attorney said over the phone the Texas Rangers are investigating.
