JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A former Jaguars defensive player was arrested in Duval County this weekend following an alleged domestic dispute with his wife that turned physical.
Eight-year NFL veteran Roy Miller was booked into the Duval County Pre-Trial Detention Facility at 4:53 a.m. Saturday on a misdemeanor charge for domestic battery.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office was called to Miller's home in Jacksonville at approximately 12:15 a.m., according to the arrest report. The responding JSO officer addressed the victim, Nicole Miller, once arriving to the scene.
The victim told the officer that she and her husband had an argument over where he had been previously in the night. The argument eventually led to a physical confrontation, according to the victim, at which point the suspect, Miller, grabbed her by the hair and began pushing her around.
The officer noted in the arrest report that the victim's shirt had been "nearly ripped completely off her body as a result of the struggle." The officer added that the victim had a small abrasion on her face, a scratch on the back of her neck and a braid had been torn out of her head.
The victim told JSO she was unsure how Miller came to hit her in the face because she was busy trying to get away. She declined to have the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department respond to the residence to treat her injuries, according to JSO.
An eyewitness who was at the home during the time of the incident told authorities she heard the two begin to argue and moved their kids to the other side of the house.
The two have been married for over six years and have four children together. The victim has a 17-year-old son from another marriage, who was also at the home that night, according to the report.
The witness told JSO that at some point during the argument a door was slammed shut and then she could hear a "thumping" coming from the bedroom. The witness described the sound as that of someone being hit. The witness said she heard the victim tell Miller not to hit her again.
The witness told JSO that the victim had no injuries prior to entering the bedroom with Miller.
Miller was found inside the house, asleep in the master bedroom. Miller agreed to walk outside and speak with the officer, at which point he was read his Miranda rights and placed under arrest. The victim declined to provide a written statement to JSO.
It was noted in the arrest report that both the victim and the suspect were under the influence of alcohol.
Miller, who now plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, was released by the Jaguars in March after four seasons with the team. He was picked up in Jacksonville after leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013.
Prior to his departure, the 30-year-old defensive tackle was regarded as one of the team's veteran leaders. Miller currently has six tackles in seven games with the Chiefs this season.
The Kansas City Chiefs organization released the following statement to ESPN following Miller's arrest:
"This morning we were informed about an incident involving one of our players, Roy Miller. We are still in the process of gathering details on the situation. We will have no further comment at this time.”
The Chiefs are currently on a bye week, but are slated to resume play on Nov. 19, when they will face the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Miller made first appearance before a judge at approximately 2 p.m. Saturday. He was granted release on recognizance and is scheduled to appear before court in Duval County on Nov. 28.
