Father facing charges after deputies say his five-year-old got behind the wheel of his vehicle

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened Monday. Fortunately, the two young children were not hurt.

SAN ANTONIO — A father is facing charges after investigators said he left his two young children in a running car and one of the kids got behind the wheel.

It happened Monday at the Family Dollar off Foster Road on the Northeast side. The father told Bexar County Deputies he ran into the store and left his two children sleeping in a running car.

However, deputies said a five-year-old child got behind the wheel and backed the car up into the roadway before putting in back into drive. The child hit a curb and that is when witnesses stepped in to stop him.

Deputies questioned the father and then arrested him. He claimed he was only in the store for less than 10 minutes. 41-year-old Derrick Deloach is facing two counts of abandoning/endangering a child.

The two children were released to their mother. Child Protective Services was contacted, according to investigators.
