COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Commerce City Police are looking for a person who cut a wire in a transformer, got electrocuted and walked away from the scene early Thursday morning.
About 5 a.m. Thursday, United Power had an outage and sent workers to inspect a transformer in the area of 10500 Havana Street. They found a hacksaw and cut wire, and then called police.
Joanna Small, public information officer for the Commerce City Police Department, told 9NEWS that the person should not have survived.
"United Power told us we should probably be looking for a body," Small said.
Officers found a bicycle and the charred remains of clothing. They watched surveillance video that showed two explosions and a person walking away from the transformer.
Small said crews spent more than 10 hours looking for the suspect in the area.
"We were out in the area with drones, we had our firefighter partners using infrared technology to try to find this individual, we found charred clothes covered in ash," Small said. "So we can only assume that maybe they stripped out of their top layer of clothing, and walked away."
On Friday, police said they are still looking for the person, who they said caused a lot of damage to infrastructure and likely to themselves.
"He could very well be walking around Commerce City semi-nude… although we didn’t receive any “naked man” calls yesterday and he’s likely clothed (and in desperate need of medical attention) by now," police said in their Facebook post.
Anyone who has information on the incident or recognizes the bike can call the Commerce City Police tip line at 303-289-3626.
