Dog survives more than a week inside Texas shipping container, says Coast Guard

The Coast Guard said Connie was heard barking and scratching from inside a container at Port Houston that had been sealed.

HOUSTON — It’s said that cats have nine lives, but a dog found in a shipping container Wednesday could give any cat a run for its money.

The dog, named "Connie," was found in the shipping container at the Bayport Terminal at Port Houston. According to the Coast Guard, inspectors were randomly checking out containers when they heard barking and scratching coming from one of them.

"Connie the container dog, just as a little play on words there," said 2nd Class Marine Science Technician, Ryan McMahon.

When they lowered it down and opened it up, they said Connie jumped right out.

"I know she must have been scared in there, the crying and the barking we heard but as soon as we opened it, she just turned into this loving, happy puppy," said 1st Class Marine Science Technician, Lucas Loe.

McMahon and Loe said they'll never forget the moment they rescued little Connie.

"Once we realized that it was actually a dog in the container, we were shocked," Loe said.

"Pure joy because you could see it on her face that she was so happy to see us and see a human being that was ready to help her," McMahon said.

The Coast Guard said the container was filled with cars from a junkyard and they suspect the dog may have been in one of the cars that was loaded into it. The container made it to Port Houston on Jan. 23, so they believe the dog had been inside for more than a week!

"Just the chances of finding her in tens of thousands of containers on this terminal are 1,000,000 to 1," McMahon said.

Connie's rescuers said she was tired and hungry, but glad to see them. She was given water and taken to Pasadena Animal Shelter for care.

"Thanks to their actions, Connie the Container Dog is safe and sound!" reads the Coast Guard's Facebook post.

Connie will be put up for adoption soon. If you’re interested, you can fill out an application. The information on adoption is in the Coast Guard’s post below.

"I hope she goes (to a) Coast Guard member, but if she doesn't, hopefully it's a nice home," Loe said.

Connie was checked out by a vet at the Pasadena Animal Shelter and got all her shots.

Now, she's going to a rescue group where she'll get the care she needs and they'll find her a fur-ever home.
