DALLAS — One of the busiest stretches of highway in Dallas just got a bit slower. Or at least that's what the signs say.
The Texas Department of Transportation has installed 65 mph speed limit signs on U.S. 75/Central Expressway, from Mockingbird Lane to Woodall Rogers Freeway downtown, after the Dallas City Council approved a speed limit reduction from 70 mph.
The reduction didn't officially go into effect until the signs were installed, and they're now in place.
Dallas City Council member Paul Ridley said he had asked the Texas Department of Transportation to a speed study on Central Expressway after news reports about drivers exceeding 100 mph on the highway.
“I want to thank TXDOT for promptly conducting a speed survey and deciding this was a good thing for the city of Dallas,” Ridley said.
Central Expressway made national headlines after reports earlier this year about the crash involving Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice on the highway. Police said both Rice's Lamborghini and SMU cornerback Teddy Knox Knox's Corvette were traveling over 115 miles per hour just before that crash.
The Dallas City Council in 2022 approved a Vision Zero resolution with the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and reducing the number of serious traffic-related injuries by half by 2030.
